Sean McGarr
Being a CEO doesn't necessarily mean being a suit-and-tie guy. Exhibit A: Music mogul Sean McGarr. As president and CEO of Webster Hall Entertainment, Inc., and co-owner of the New York City music venue Webster Hall, he oversees the club (billed as "New York's hottest nightclub"), a dance-music record label, a music distribution company, e-commerce ventures, an advertising company, corporate events, and a disc-jockey tour. It's a multimillion-dollar enterprise.
McGarr, a former speech and communication major, credits Northeastern with helping him develop business smarts, too. "The co-op program allowed me to sell real estate and get my feet wet in business while I was studying communications," he explains.
When he first started, McGarr had no record label experience, but he quickly learned how to market the label. He got more and more involved with other aspects of Webster Hall's business and in 2000 was named president.
Despite the responsibilities of being CEO, McGarr has fun in the job. "It allows me to be around young people all the time," he says. "That's where trends are happening. The best thing about it is it lets me be creative."
