Who hires Northeastern law students?
Law firms, government offices, judges, legal service and advocacy organizations, corporations, unions, public defender agencies and academic institutions throughout the United States and around the world regularly hire Northeastern law students on a quarterly basis throughout the year.
When do co-op work placements begin and how long do they last?
Northeastern operates year-round on a quarter calendar. Co-op work placements generally begin on or just prior to the first week of September, December, March and June and last for 11 weeks.
What is required of employers?
Employers must provide students with a minimum of 35 hours per week of substantive legal work under the direct supervision of a licensed attorney. At the conclusion of the 11-week work placement, the supervising attorney must complete a performance evaluation using a form provided by Northeastern that becomes a permanent part of the student’s academic record.
How do employers hire Northeastern law students?
Northeastern administers a job posting system that provides participating employers with a pool of qualified applicants. Employers are polled in advance of each quarter as to their hiring needs, receive resumes of interested students, and contact the Office of Cooperative Legal Education to request interviews and offer positions. Employers not participating in this process may hire students who contact them directly pending administrative approval.
What are Northeastern law students paid?
Employers determine student compensation. Salaries range widely from volunteer positions to upwards of $2,500 per week for large private law firms. In some instances, funding may be available for government and nonprofit employers through the federal work-study program. Students accepting volunteer public interest positions may apply for scholarships through the Law School.
How can I post a position?
Employers interested in hiring Northeastern law students on a regular basis should complete a New Employer Application Form. Upon receipt, employers will be contacted by a staff member.
