La Comunidad en Acción (LaCLA) Scholarship 

The LaCLA Scholarship was established in 1993 by a group of Latin@ students at Northeastern University whose aim was to increase the retention of Latin@ students at the University.  The purpose of the LaCLA Scholarship is to encourage the involvement of Latin@ students in servicing the community in the greater Boston area.

Eligibility:

1. Students must be currently enrolled and attending Northeastern University as a full-time day undergraduate, within a degree program.

2. Students must submit a copy their 2010-2011 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the LaCLA application, including proof of its submission

3. Students must demonstrate a history of Community Service involvement.

4. Students must have a GPA of 3.3 or higher at the time of application.

5. Students must be United States citizens or U.S. permanent resident.

Awards:

Awards are full tuition only (minus any federal and/or state grant and loan awards).  The award does not include room and board, books and other non-tuition fees.  Awards are renewable annually for LaCLA scholars who maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, satisfactorily complete a minimum of 200 hours annually of community service, attend mandatory tutor training, and attend required LaCLA meetings, events and programs.

LaCLA Tutoring Information

"Easing the Transition from Childhood to Adulthood'
Are you interested in making a difference in the lives of middle school children?  Be a mentor!

Please contact Shawn Wallace at Maafa@csrrc.org or call 617-427-8077.

Mentors will be pared with a middle school student and will be asked to commit 10 hours per week to program:

  • 3-4 hours of sharing an activity with your mentee
  • 3-4 hours in a large group activity and learning experience with all of the mentor/mentee pairs
  • 2-4 hours planning and preparing for the weekly mentorship and large group sessions

  • Workshops/ongoing activities for Latin girls.
  • Charlas/actividades para adolescentes latinas.
  • Workshops for parents: how to talk kids about sex.
  • Charlas para padres: hablando a los hijos de sexo.

Is offering a community based program-Entre Nuestras Familias- to young latin girls and their families. This is great opportunity for people who want to be leaders, role models,  bring new ideas in community activities/events and help prevent and educate about teen pregnancy, STDs and HIV/AIDS.
