New Grant For Study of Muslim Societies

The School of Journalism, in partnership with Middle East Studies, has received a $65,000 grant from the Social Science Research Council. The grant will expand opportunities for journalism and policy-oriented students in political science, international affairs, and other disciplines in global experiential education.

This program includes new dialogues and international co-ops in Muslim societies, and an open classroom course in the fall. The course is called, "America, Islam, and the Middle East." The course will be taught by Prof. Denis Sullivan; Rami Khouri of American University of Beirut; Stephen Burgard, director of the School of Journalism; Michael Dukakis, a distinguished professor at Northeastern, and others.

A Website will be developed, where students on Dialogues across the world will post articles, similar to what journalism and photography students did over the last five weeks while in Jordan. Journalism Lecturer, Carlene Hempel will serve as Managing Editor of that site.

The SSRC grant is part of a larger award to 10 interdisciplinary centers at U.S. universities, and is supported by the Carnegie Corp. of New York.
