2011-2012 Gideon Klein Scholar

The Jewish Studies program congratulates Emili Kaufman ’12 on being named the 2011-2012 Gideon Klein Scholar. Kaufman will study the work of Felix Nussbaum, a German-Jewish artist who perishedin Auschwitz.

Kaufman writes, “I would like to focus a large part of my research on how Nussbaum managed to so accurately recreate Jewish suffering through art, his life and the survival of his work. I plan to accompany my research with an illustration of my own that contributes to the memory of the Jewish people persecuted by the Nazis.”

The Gideon Klein award honors the memory of Gideon Klein, brilliant pianist and composer, who was imprisoned in Terezin and other concentration camps until his death in 1945. While in Terezin, Klein inspired other musicians to compose and share their music with others in most difficult circumstances. The award was established in 1997 by the late Prof. Bill Giessen in memory of his mother, Gustel Cormann Giessen.
