New to MATLAB?
MATLAB is a high-level language and interactive environment that lets you focus on your course work and applications, rather than on programming details. It enables you to solve many numerical problems in a fraction of the time it takes to write a program in a lower-level language. You can also use MATLAB to analyze and visualize data using automation capabilities, thereby avoiding the manual repetition.

For MATLAB information, access and support at Northeastern, go to the ITS service page: http://www.northeastern.edu/its/services/software/matlab/.

Windows 7 Start button

Software changes coming to a Start menu near you

To enhance the software offerings provided to Northeastern-managed Windows computers on campus, ITS will be upgrading to a new virtual software deployment method called App-V 5.0. Computers using the standard Northeastern image, such as managed faculty and staff computers, ITS labs and select non-ITS computer labs, are impacted by this upgrade. Beginning this summer, first computers labs will be updated, followed later by faculty and staff machines.

What Is App-V 5.0 and Why Is It Important?

App-V (application virtualization) is a behind-the-scenes process used to deploy over 75% of the software on Northeastern-managed Windows computers. ITS will be updating the software used in this process to the latest version – going from App-V 4.6 to App-V 5.0 – as it offers more features and better software management. When ITS switches over to App-V 5.0, there will be no functional change to the end user. Software will still be accessible through the Start menu on a Northeastern-managed Windows computer. However, once the switch is made to App-V 5.0, there will be a difference in what software is available. After the upgrade, only Windows computers on a Northeastern-managed 64-bit image will have full access to the ITS Windows software available to the Northeastern community.

Retiring Older and Infrequently Used Software Applications

As part of this project, ITS evaluated the applications made available through this software deployment method. Both older versions and infrequently used applications will be retired once computers switch to App-V 5.0. The majority of retired software titles have a more recent version available. For example – AutoCAD 2009 through AutoCAD 2012 will be retired, while the more recent versions (AutoCAD 2013, AutoCAD 2014 and AutoCAD 2015) will be available. A full list of impacted software applications will be posted on the App-V 5.0 project page.

Timeframe

App-V 5.0 will be deployed in a phased manner, similar to the Office 365 project. Northeastern-managed Windows machines in computer labs will be switched first and in groups over a period of time. As this upgrade approaches, look for updates from ITS on the App-V 5.0 project page.

Accessing software at Northeastern

Software is available for your Mac or Windows computer in a variety of ways depending on your role on campus and the device you are using. Visit the Software & Hardware Services section for more information, including charts listing titles of Northeastern-licensed software and where each title is available.

Most computers come with an operating system installed. After that, many come with Microsoft Office and possibly an antivirus software product. Methods for accessing additional software depend on your role at Northeastern – faculty, staff or student – and the operating system on your computer.

The standard Northeastern image – faculty/staff computers

There is a standard Northeastern image (suite of software) available for faculty and staff computers. These applications are installed on your device and are readily available. On Northeastern-managed Windows computers, most software is made available to faculty and staff through a process called Application Virtualization (App-V), which must be run initially while you are connected to a Northeastern network: NUnet, NUwave, or via the VPN. These applications are not installed directly on your computer but are readily available to ensure your computer contains only those applications you use.

Faculty and staff will find additional titles to download by going to the Software Center on a Windows computer, or to Self-Service on a Mac. This will allow you to download and install the applications you want, without adding extra software you don’t need.

The standard Northeastern image – lab computers

There is a standard Northeastern image (suite of software) available in ITS-managed labs, such as the InfoCommons and the DMC. These applications are installed and ready to use. A full list of applications can be found on the Software – Labs, Classrooms and Individual Access page.

Virtual Desktop/Virtual applications

Many larger software packages are available for students, faulty and staff from RemoteApp accessible from myNEU. This method also allows Mac users to access certain software applications that are only available on a Windows platform.

Local Installation Options

Software Downloads

Some software, such as Symantec Endpoint Protection antivirus software, is available to students, faulty and staff on the myNEU portal through a section called Software Downloads.

Free & discounted software

Some software, such as Adobe Creative Cloud, is available to students, faulty and staff on the myNEU portal through a section called Free and Discounted software. The link directs you to a third-party vendor who provides access to select software titles for either free, or at a severely discounted price. ITS publishes information on the software that have been negotiated for on Northeastern’s behalf, however the vendor website may offer additional software titles.

Direct from vendor

As a result of ITS partnerships, students, faculty and staff have access to software directly from some vendors. To use this method, you will be required to identify yourself as a member of the Northeastern community and possibly enter a code specific for Northeastern. This way, you will have fully patched, updated software at all times.

Local install from the ITS Service Desk – faculty/staff

Faculty/staff my also request some software titles from the ITS Service Desk to install on University-owned devices which are not configured with the standard Northeastern image. Clicking on the Locally Installed Software request through the ServiceNow portal (sign-in may be required) will bring you to a browsable list of software available for Windows or Mac. Simply select the software you need, add it to your cart, and submit your request – the ITS Service Desk will contact you with directions to install.

If you need access to a specific software title, visit the Available Software pages or contact the ITS Service Desk at 617.373.4357 (xHELP).

TEXPO
Information Technology Services is excited to have hosted TEXPO, the first annual Technology in Teaching Expo, on March 17th. The event was quite successful. To listen to or watch some of the sessions, go to the TEXPO site.

  • Faculty and staff shared their experience with technologies used for teaching and learning in and out of the classroom, and new projects in development.
  • Training and support departments discussed the technology and tools available for faculty.
  • Professor Lyrical gave a lively keynote on student engagement.
  • ATS Director Stephanie Trowbridge presented an infographic (PDF) on tool use at Northeastern.

We look forward to hosting this great event next year, and have tentatively scheduled March 15, 2016 – save the date. If you have topics of interest or ideas for technologies that should be explored next year, email your suggestions to ats@northeastern.edu.

Course Development Technology Training Series
Beginning the summer semester, Academic Technology Services is offering the Online Course Development Technology Training Series on an ongoing basis. The series is designed to help new faculty and those who would like to refresh their knowledge of online teaching tools, and consists of three courses:

  • Blackboard Course Management – A two-hour, hands-on session focused on the course management aspects of the tool, which will make your life easier.
  • Tools for Creating Online Content and Interactions – A short session that offers an overview of engaging applications that faculty can use to move course content and student interactions online. Q&A will help you narrow in on tools to follow up on in more detail.
  • Storyline Basics – A two-hour, hands-on session in Storyline, a flexible and full-featured tool that faculty can use to create interactive e-learning content.

The courses can be taken as a series, or individually as desired; dates will be posted on the ATS training website. Customized and small-group versions are also available. Please contact ats@neu.edu with questions about individual or group registration.

New Tools

VoiceThread Available for Blackboard Integration
VoiceThread is a third-party tool that can be integrated into Blackboard, which allows you and your students to create multimedia presentations and group projects, and discuss via text, voice, or video. Discussion is asynchronous, so students can enter the discussion at their convenience, and you can watch the discussion as it unfolds.

Because Northeastern has purchased licenses for faculty and students, all faculty are granted Pro accounts when you log in through Blackboard. When the VoiceThread is created through Blackboard and linked correctly, sharing settings are easily managed. The integration will also automatically create a gradebook column, so that faculty can grade in VoiceThread and have the grade sent directly to the Blackboard gradebook.

Voice Thread Screenshot

Learn more about how VoiceThread works, and the proper way to create and link VoiceThread elements through Blackboard. A new training course, “VoiceThread Multimedia Discussions,” is also available beginning this month; specific dates are on the ATS training website.

Storyline 2 Now Available for Free Installation on Northeastern-Imaged Computers
Storyline provides a PowerPoint-compatible interface to help you create engaging and interactive online course materials that blend instruction, audio, video, and optional assessment – all in a visually interesting format. Whether you’re looking for an easy way to add engagement to voice-over-PowerPoint instruction that you already have, or you want to experiment with scenario-based learning activities, Storyline is a quick-and-easy solution.

While the software can be quite costly and it was previously available only in the Digital Scholarship Commons lab, a new enterprise license means that faculty and staff can use it for free on your Northeastern-imaged computer. Go to the ATS website for instructions for downloading the software and other resources. Training in Storyline functionality will be offered throughout the semester, and you can see course listings and register at the ATS website.
