Through Northeastern’s Microsoft Office 365 subscription, all faculty and staff, Sponsored Account holders, retirees, and CPS adjunct faculty can download the latest version of Microsoft Office – currently Office 2013 for Windows, Office 2011 for Mac (OS X 10.8, 10.9) and Office 2016 for Mac (OS X 10.10+) – on computers that you personally use.
Northeastern’s Office 365 ProPlus license also includes OneDrive for Business, an online file storage service, with unlimited storage space, and access to online versions of the Office applications.
NOTE: Versions of Office installed from Office 365 are not part of the Northeastern image and should NOT be installed on managed or any other Northeastern-owned computers. If you wish to install Office on a Northeastern-owned computer, see the Windows and Mac links above for directions.
Platforms: Windows, Mac and mobile.
The Northeastern Office 365 license provides Office 365 business-class email (and OWA access). This license also provides access to Office 365 ProPlus services, including the ability to download and locally install Microsoft Office applications on up to five computers that you personally use; unlimited cloud storage through OneDrive for Business; online versions of the Office applications; mobile applications where you can access, edit, and view Office documents on your mobile device; and regular access to the latest software updates.
For all faculty and staff, your access to all Office 365 services ends when you leave the university.
Log into the Office 365 portal and click “Install” under “Install Office on more devices.” Or if you go through Outlook on the web, go to the settings (gear) icon at the top right of your window, and select “Office 365 settings.” In the new window, select the “Software” option, and then follow the instructions to install.
The Microsoft portal auto-detects your operating system, presenting you currently with:
- Windows – Office 2013
- Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) or 10.9 (Mavericks) – Office 2011 for Mac
- Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) – Office 2016 for Mac
NOTE: Downloaded software will be installed separately from any previous versions of Microsoft Office, so if you have an older version of Office and install Office 2013 or 2016, you will have two different copies of Microsoft Office that are accessible.
You may install Office 365 ProPlus on up to five (5) non Northeastern-owned computers that you personally use. You will be prompted for your Office 365 login ([myNEU username]@northeastern.edu and myNEU password) in order to install the applications. After installation, Microsoft will verify your Office 365 account in the background – you may be prompted to reauthenticate your license; failure to do so will result in the installed software reverting to read-only status, and loss of access to OneDrive for Business and mobile applications. If you leave the university you will no longer have an Office 365 account access.
DO NOT install Office 365 ProPlus on Northeastern-owned computers. If your computer is owned by the university – managed or unmanaged – and you want the latest Microsoft Office software, please see the Microsoft Office – Windows and Microsoft Office – Mac pages for details on how to get it, or contact the ITS Service Desk at 617.373.4357 (xHELP) or firstname.lastname@example.org.
DO NOT install Office 365 ProPlus on computers that you are not personally using. To install, you must tie that copy of Office to your Northeastern Office 365 account. This links all Office applications to your account, and provides access to your Northeastern resources and files. Just as you would not share your myNEU account with others, do not share your Northeastern Office 365 access.

NOTE: All of these offerings from Microsoft and Lynda.com provide the look and feel for general versions of Office 2013, Office 2016 for Mac and the Office online applications, and will help you familiarize yourself with the applications. They do not fully represent what faculty and staff have access to in Northeastern’s Office 365 ProPlus versions.
