How do I get a faculty/staff email account?
Faculty and staff receive @northeastern.edu email accounts on their start dates. Contractors, vendors and others affiliated with Northeastern who need email and desktop computer access must obtain Sponsored Accounts to use these resources.
What is my username?
The username you use to log into your email on all platforms (desktop/laptop, web, mobile) is [myNEU username]@northeastern.edu. For example, if your myNEU username is kinghusky, your new email login username is email@example.com. This is your Office 365 username and it will be used to access all Office 365 services.
What is my password?
Your password is your myNEU password.
I have forgotten my password. How can I get a new one?
Call 617.373.4357 (xHELP) for assistance with passwords or any other issues, or submit a Password Reset request through the ServiceNow portal (sign-in may be required).
Can I access my email and calendar via the web?

Can I sync my email and calendar on my phone or tablet?

My username is @northeastern.edu. Is that also my email address?
Yes. As of June 6, 2016 your email address is @northeastern.edu.
Do students get Outlook email hosted with Office 365?
No, the student email (HuskyMail) is provided through Google.
I am a retiree from Northeastern. Can I choose to retain my email account after leaving the university?
Yes. As part of Human Resources Management’s retirement process, eligible faculty and staff retain their university-owned email address and account. Participating retirees access this account via a web browser (OWA), or they can configure an email client.
Personal address books are not automatically preserved at retirement. Retirees for whom a personal address book is essential should export personal address books prior to leaving the university.
If you are a retiree and would prefer not to receive this service, please contact the ITS Service Desk at 617.373.4357 (xHELP). Please be aware that if you opt out of this service, all content within your email account will be permanently deleted.

What versions of Microsoft Outlook are currently used at Northeastern?
On Windows Northeastern-managed computers, Outlook 2010 is the standard for images prior to Fall 2014, and Outlook 2013 is the current image standard.
On Mac Northeastern-managed computers, Outlook 2011 is the current standard.
How can I learn more about using Outlook?

How can I install Microsoft Outlook on a computer that does not have a Northeastern-managed image?
Please visit the Microsoft Office – Windows and Microsoft Office – Mac pages to learn all the ways that you can access Office, which includes Outlook. Northeastern-owned, unmanaged computers can get a version of Outlook through ITS. Personal computers can get Outlook through Microsoft.
What are the known limitations of Outlook hosted with Office 365?
- Emails cannot exceed 35 MB in size, and attachments cannot be more than 25 MB.
- Office 365 uses ActiveSync, therefore BlackBerry devices must be run BlackBerry 10 OS, which supports ActiveSync. If your BlackBerry does not run BlackBerry 10 OS, it will not be able to access email.
- Early users of Office 365 have reported issues syncing with Mac Mail. ITS recommends using Outlook 2011 for Mac.
- Outlook 2011 for the Mac utilizes Mac’s Spotlight for its indexing and searches. If you have a very large mailbox this indexing may be an issue. If you are finding that your searches are not returning recent emails but are returning older ones then Spotlight has not fully indexed your emails.
- Management of distribution lists (groups) and shared mailboxes under Office 365 requires the use of a third-party tool. Follow the instructions in this How To.
- Setting automatic replies on Office 365 shared mailboxes must be done through the Outlook Web App. Follow the instructions in this How To.
If I send or am sent an email where the message exceeds 35MB, what happens to these messages?
If you create an email that is larger than the 35MB limit in Outlook or Outlook Web Access, you will see a mail tip (popup balloon) telling you that the email is too large and cannot be sent. If someone tries to send you an email larger that the limit from other email programs, the email will be bounced back to the sender.
I use IMAP for my Northeastern email. How do I configure my email client for IMAP?

I have access to a shared mailbox. How do I see that email in my own inbox?
When you add a shared mailbox to Outlook on your computer, the email does not show up in your inbox – the full mailbox will be visible in the left menu, below the folders for your own mailbox. Follow the directions in How To: Add an Existing Department or Shared Mailbox to Outlook on a Windows computer or How To: Become a Delegate on an Existing Department or Shared Mailbox in Outlook 2011.
How is email encrypted through Office 365?
Email sent to external recipients with a sensitivity header of “Confidential” will automatically be encrypted and the recipient will receive an email with instructions on how to access the email. They will need a Microsoft Live account under their email address to access the encrypted email; they can create that account at the time they receive the email if necessary.
I’ve noticed a lot of emails going into my Junk E-Mail folder, what’s going on?
Since Northeastern’s email is hosted on Microsoft’s Office 365 servers, the Microsoft junk filter rules are acting on all email. We suggest that you check your Junk E-Mail folder and add any senders or domains that should not be filtered to your “safe senders” list. There’s another folder – Clutter – that also seems to be filtering my email, what is that?
Microsoft has gradually rolled out Clutter for all Office 365 business email accounts. Outlook learns from your behavior in order to filter emails that it believes are “lower priority” into the Clutter folder. The filter is adaptive and based on how you interact with your email. If you find there are emails going into that folder that you do not think belong there, drag them back into your Inbox and Clutter should adapt. This folder is visible in all versions of Outlook, but management is contained within Outlook on the web. I tried to set an automatic reply on a shared mailbox, and it put the auto reply on MY mailbox, how do I get it on the shared one?

Outlook Web App (OWA)
What is the address to access the Office 365 OWA?
The primary URL is http://outlook.office365.com – or you can skip straight to the Northeastern login page by using http://outlook.com/owa/neu.edu. Log in with your Office 365 username ([myNEU username]@northeastern.edu) and your myNEU password.
What features are in the Office 365 OWA?
The latest Outlook Web App allows you to interact with your email and calendar like you do in your desktop/laptop client. Learn more about getting started from Microsoft (includes video). For training, log in to lynda.northeastern.edu and search for “Outlook Web App (OWA) 2013 Essential Training.”
What are the recommended browsers for OWA?
Microsoft recommends the following browsers for an optimal experience:
- Internet Explorer 10+
- Firefox latest version (minimum v12)
- Chrome latest version (minimum v18)
- Safari latest version (minimum v6)
Why won’t the bookmark I set for OWA work?
If you created the bookmark after logging in to OWA, that bookmark will not be valid for any other visit. See How To: Bookmark the Office 365 Outlook Web App (OWA).
Can I go directly to a shared mailbox in OWA, without starting in my own mailbox?
Yes. To do so, you must use (and bookmark) a specific URL for each shared mailbox you want to access this way:
https://outlook.office365.com/owa/[email name of mailbox]@northeastern.edu/
For example, if the shared mailbox for the King Husky Association has the email KHA@neu.edu, the URL is https://outlook.office365.com/owa/KHA@northeastern.edu.
When you sign in with your Office 365 username and password, you will be taken directly to the shared mailbox.
The new interface is nice, but I’d rather use the old, light interface. Is there a way I can still do that?
On a desktop/laptop, you will need to use (and bookmark) a different URL:

If you are accessing OWA on a mobile device, any Office 365 OWA URL will bring you to the light version.
Can I sync my email on my phone or tablet?
Yes. All iOS and Android devices use Exchange ActiveSync to sync with Microsoft’s Office 365 Exchange servers. Follow the directions here for iPhone or iPad and for Android.
BlackBerry devices must be run BlackBerry 10 OS, which is the only one that supports ActiveSync. If your BlackBerry does not run BlackBerry 10 OS, it will not be able to access email. Follow the directions here.
