Once you have received your I-20 or DS-2019, you are required to pay a federally mandated SEVIS fee for the maintenance of their electronic record. You must pay the fee before you can apply for your visa. The SEVIS fee cannot be processed at a U.S. consulate or port of entry.

You must have proof of payment of the SEVIS fee when you apply for your visa and at Customs when you enter the country. If you pay the fee by credit card, you will be able to print the receipt immediately. If you pay by check or money order, you will receive a receipt in the mail.

Canadian citizens should note that although you are not required to procure a visa to enter the United States, you are still required to pay the SEVIS fee before entering the country to study at the University.
