Preparing for Your Child’s Arrival to Northeastern

Immigration documents

In order to enter the U.S. your son or daughter will need the following documents:

• Valid passport (passport should be valid at least six months into the future)

• Valid visa entry stamp

• Certificate of eligibility

o Form I-20 or Form DS-2019

Health records and medicine

• If you have not already submitted the Northeastern University Health Report your son or daughter must bring the completed form with them to the U.S. http://www.northeastern.edu/uhcs/forms/HealthReport0809.pdf. This form must be completed in English by a physician.

We recommend that your son or daughter also bring with them a

• Copy of medical records including a list of allergies (translated into English)

• List or emergency phone numbers, addresses and contacts in your home country and in the U.S.

Clothing

Due to the seasonal variations your son or daughter will need both lightweight and heavyweight apparel. Temperatures on average range from -6 ◦C to 28 ◦C. Boston is a very metropolitan area, there is a large selection of places to shop.

Items to leave at home

The below items can be easily purchased in the U.S., your son or daughter may want to avoid carrying them:

• Home appliances (toasters, coffee makers, etc.)

• Printers and scanners

• Glassware or anything else that is fragile

• Heavy books

• Bedding and linens

• Valuable items (Jewelry, etc.)
