Health Insurance Requirement

Massachusetts law requires that all full time students (international and domestic) have qualifying health insurance under the Qualifying Student Health Insurance Program (QSHIP) law. International students are required to purchase the Northeastern University Student Health Plan (NUSHP) and will be billed at the beginning of each semester. Foreign-based policies do not meet Massachusetts’ state standards.

Health insurance that meets state requirements is mandatory for all international students and scholars. Special regulations apply to J students and scholars.

International students may be granted a waiver if they have health insurance with an U.S.-based carrier that meets QSHIP standards. If you are already covered by a domestic insurance carrier and you have ascertained that your coverage is comparable, you have the right to waive the required student insurance by visiting MyNEU Portal and clicking “Self-Service.” Fulbright students with health insurance from the U.S. Department of State also have the right to waive NUSHP. However, if an alternate health plan is chosen, the student must have access to health services in the vicinity of Northeastern.

You will be billed for NUSHP and the burden is on you to prove that your insurance coverage meets the requirements of the state mandated health insurance laws.
