Co-op, Internships, & Experiential Learning

Cooperative education for International students

All international students in valid nonimmigrant visa classifications allowing for participation in co-op must meet federally mandated and institutionally approved eligibility criteria, and must receive employment authorization from ISSI in advance of each and every period of employment. International students must never engage in employment without prior authorization as determined by visa status/classification and type of employment.

International students in valid F-1 visa status may engage in Curricular Practical Training (CPT) after receiving approval from a co-op faculty member or academic advisor/SEVIS contact (for graduate level required internships), and only after procuring legal authorization to do so from ISSI. ISSI has a full-time staff member who can provide crucial guidance throughout the CPT employment authorization process.

• International exchange visitors in J-1 or J-2 nonimmigrant visa classifications should consult with an ISSI staff member as part of the process for receiving proper employment authorization.

• International students in F-1 or J-1 status may find additional information and required forms necessary to request and receive proper employment authorization for co-op and required internships.
