Andrés Alarcón was a dedicated student at Northeastern and an enthusiastic member of the ISSI. He was very active on campus and, unfortunately, left this world all too early. He was an avid soccer fan, so in his honor this tournament is named.

A Night With François Pienaar

François Pienaar, with twenty nine international caps to his name, reached the highest peak in rugby union: he captained his country South Africa, to World Cup victory in 1995 on home turf and was presented the Webb Ellis Trophy by President Nelson Mandela. In winning rugby's ultimate prize, François not only helped put South Africa back on the sporting map but also, having been named ‘Newsmaker of the Year', he is his country's most celebrated icon after Nelson Mandela. Indeed, the two men forged a friendship during the World Cup when Mandela appeared on the presentation rostrum wearing a Springbok jersey with François' number on the back.

Special Screening of Invictus

In anticipation of "A Night with Françios Pienaar", on Friday the 15th, we are holding a special free screening of the Academy Award nominated film "Invictus". Starring Matt Damon as François Pienaar and Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela in Oscar-nominated roles, this Clint Eastwood directed film tells the inspirational story of the South African rugby team that won the World Cup in 1995 against the backdrop of the dismantling of apartheid.

NATARAJ is an annual South Asian culture show, one of the largest at Northeastern University. For 22 years, NATARAJ has been the signature event for UTSAV (South Asian Organization) and attracts many members of the Northeastern community to Blackman Auditorium every year as well as over 100 performers. Come and see all that South Asian culture has to offer and prepare to be mesmerized.

Persian New Year Celebration: Norooz
Location:

Norooz is recognized by the UN’s General Assembly as a spring festival of Persian origin, which has been celebrated for over 3,000 years. In the Persian solar calendar No-rooz, which means new day, marks the first day of spring, and the beginning of the new year. Norooz is also celebrated in many other parts of the world, including the Kurds, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and parts of the Middle East. The most important tradition of this holiday is setting a table called HaftSīn. HaftSīn symbolizes seven specific items starting with the letter ‘S’ or Sīn ( س) in the Persian alphabet. The items symbolically correspond to seven elements of Life, namely Fire, Earth, Water, Air, Plants, Animals, and Humans. Come enjoy the festivities through traditional music, games, cuisine, dance and other cultural pastimes in Persian culture.
