The International Student & Scholar Institute (ISSI) of Northeastern University invites you to kick off the 2013 Carnevale celebration! Join ISSI staff and student leaders to sample an array of international cuisines, make friends from across the globe, and learn more about all the events and activities planned for Carnevale 2013.



18th Annual International Ice Carving Competition

Krentzman Quad
Time: 11:00am-2:00pm

Ready, set, CHISEL! Harness your cultural creativity as you transform blocks of ice into works of art. Teams will compete to produce chilling representations of some of the most iconic landmarks on Earth. From the Eiffel Tower to the Great Wall of China, the possibilities for this frozen frenzy are endless! Prizes given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams!

Lunar New Year Celebration

Lunar New Year is among Asia’s most widely celebrated holidays. Spanning China, Korea, and Vietnam, this is one festival you certainly won’t want to miss. Join these diverse cultures as they come together to enjoy exquisite cuisine, fun activities, and outstanding performances to rejoice in the Lunar New Year! Co-organized by the Asian Student Union, Pi Delta Psi, the Vietnamese Student Association and the ISSI.

Momo Madness Monday: In Search of the Global Momo

Dumplings are an essential part of Asian cuisine which reflects the rich diversity of the continent. Between Chinese Jiaozi and Korean Kimchi, each country brings a unique flavor to these scrumptious morsels. After learning the various art of dumpling folding, put your skills to the test at the ISSI’s dumpling cooking competition!

Pre-registration is not required. This event is open to everyone.



Beyond Borders: Israel

A Musical Journey to Italy

Join us for the story of Italy as told through its folk tradition -- from shepherd songs of the Appennini Mountains to music from the courts and piazzas of Naples. The renowned ensemble Newpoli will bring this celebration to life using original dialects and traditional instruments. Joining the group on stage will be special guest “Pulcinella” who will bring the audience to the Naples of centuries ago.

Ballroom Dance Workshop

Have you always wanted to learn a new dance but haven’t got the chance to? Carnevale is hosting a dance workshop taught by NU Ballroom Dancing Club. In this one-hour workshop, you will learn a dance or two and get to practice with everyone there. No prior experience required. Grab a friend and join us for this hour of fun!

Chinese Cinema in the World

Join Northeastern’s Chinese Cinema Club for a screening of Zhang Ke Jia’s 2004 film, The World. The tradition of Chinese paper cutting, traditional Chinese music, and a bilingual presentation, will set the stage for this cross-cultural cinematic experience.

International Poetry Night

Roses are red, violets are blue, and poetry’s beautiful between me and you! Share your boundless creativity at this intercultural poetry reading and discussion, and find inspiration through the varying languages and ideologies that speckle our world through spoken art. Everyone is welcome to share his or her own poems, or read the work of another, regardless of theme, language, or genre. The goal is to gain a heightened understanding of different cultures through poetic means. Refreshments will be served.



Career Fair Success Tips for International Students

Brought to you by Northeastern University's Career Services office! Don't know what to expect at the career fair? Not sure how to present yourself to employers? In this workshop we will explore cultural elements in body language, presentation of self, levels of formality and more that will help increase your confidence as you approach employers at a career fair. We will also develop and practice a short introduction – the elevator speech – to use with employers. We will review international student job search success factors and employer expectations, for career fairs and also for the job search more generally. We will discuss the critical role of networking and discuss the use of Linkedin to help you in that process. You do not need to register for this workshop.
