Maintaining Student Status
U.S.
federal regulations require international students to maintain lawful (F-1/J-1)
student status. It is the student’s responsibility to maintain lawful student
status and keep current of changes in regulations via the ISSI website and
through updates sent to student NEU-mail account. For information specific to
your case please come to the ISSI to discuss your questions with an International
Student Advisor.
Guidelines for Maintaining Student Status:
- Arrive on
campus no later than your program start date (see your I-20/DS-2019 form) and report in person to the ISSI
during a scheduled Immigration Clearance session as listed in the ISSI Orientation schedule. This
applies to newly admitted, changing degree/program, and transferring-in
international students.
- For transfer
students only: ensure timely transfers of your SEVIS record to
Northeastern from your previously attended U.S. school/college/university.
- Keep your
passport valid for at least six months into the future.
- Maintain full-time enrollment
and normal progress toward the completion of your degree or program of
study. Every student in F-1 or J-1 status must be registered full-time
each term/semesters, except during designated vacation periods. For
undergraduate day and evening students, the minimum full-time requirement is
12 semester or quarter-hours. Graduate students must register for a
minimum of 8 semester hours. International students enrolled at the English Language Center
must follow the requirement specific to his/her program.
- On-line course limitation: students
are prohibited from taking more than 3 credits or one class of on-line
coursework per term to count towards their full-time enrollment status (as
explained above).
- Obtain (if
eligible) prior authorization from the ISSI before dropping below a full
course of study.
- Notify the
ISSI of your address when you arrive and each time you change your address
while in the U.S.
All students must notify the ISSI by submitting the Change of Address
Notification Form http://www.northeastern.edu/issi/immigration/forms.html
and the Northeastern University Registrar’s Office (this may be done
through myNEU) of any address change within 10 days of moving.
- Do not accept any employment, either on-
or off-campus without written permission from the ISSI and/or
authorization from the U.S Department of Homeland Security. Please contact
the ISSI for detailed information on employment authorization.
- Obtain an extension
of your academic program, if eligible, before your visa eligibility
document (I-20 or DS-2019) expires.
- Any changes in your academic
status (e.g., early program completion, change of major, change of program
or degree, etc.) must be reported to the ISSI, so we can update your SEVIS
record accordingly.
- Before leaving the U.S.
temporarily during your study at Northeastern please make sure that you
have the following documents: a valid passport, an unexpired F-1 or J-1
visa in your passport, and a valid unexpired I-20 or DS2019 with a valid
travel signature. Note: request for travel signature must be submitted to
the ISSI at least 5-4 business days before you plan to leave.
- If applicable, comply with
the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS) also known
as Special Registration. Use the following link for
detailed information about http://www.ice.gov/pi/specialregistration/index.htm
- Once an international student
has completed a program of studies and/or any authorized post-completion
practical (F-1) or academic (J-1) training, she /he must leave the U.S.
within 60 days( F-1) or 30 days (J-1), unless she or he changes status or
otherwise legally extends his or her stay in the U.S ( e.g., starts a new
program)
