The Institute of Security and Public Policy (ISPP), located in Northeastern’s School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, develops a deep understanding of the security threats, especially threats to supply chains that the United States and other countries encounter in the 21st Century.  Areas of research include using big data to develop algorithms to detect and intervene in upcoming security threats. Current research works with the Department of Homeland Security to model the national and international transportation of shipping containers to detect anomalies that could result in national security threats, as well as developing a partnership with the Global Resilience Institute. Funding for Institute projects has come from the Department of Homeland Security. The Institute is currently developing a program of research on the changing nature of risk and security in the 21^st Century and the implications of these transformations have for societal resilience and governance.
