10/17/12 EBoard Meeting

  • Last Week’s To-Do List Review:
    • Current events in 5:
      • See merit, gives class-members an opportunity to speak in front of the class;
      • Perhaps bring updates on interests, or relevant to major (not everyone is a political science major): would be good to include topics not usually broached.
      • Not sure there is merit in rehashing current events, students should read independent news sources, and come prepared – the 5 minutes needs to remain 5 minutes, and not be extended should this stay.
      • The current events in 5 should be rigid in time: 5 min for announcements, 5 minutes for current events → keep with the schedule
      • Need to find events that are unusual or not headlines. NATO: More unusual news, encourage individual specialized topics; MUN: More standard, current affairs – internationally.
      • President will continue to find individuals to present each week; have topics approved before presentation.
    • Contacting alumna:
      • Have started reaching out but still need to clarify what exactly they are being asked to do:
        • Are essentially being asked to come and be a guest lecturer.
        • Broaden world of students and see what they are doing in the “real world” vs. This is what IRC has done for me
        • Proposal: “Hey how are you doing? We would like to ask if you would be interested in coming to speak to class for 30 min, and discuss what you are doing now, or…”
        • Objection: Belief that it is more cost than benefit → but have recent alumni, and it is understood that they will add something substantive.
    • Compiled proposal for MUN Conference:
      • Could be a good request for BOD during the BMAL special meeting
        • Good way to involve them/good task for 3-4 individuals
          • Look for specific people
  • Sheila:
    • November 5, 4:30-5:30pm Intro to IAF class → Having students from different groups come speak about their organizations.
    • Give this to the BOD, or have President do it
    • VP-Executive is interested.
  • Wednesday meetings:
    • Incredibly inconvenient for Professor
    • Suggest a more convenient time.
  • BOD Recap:
    • Agenda setting:
      • Seemed like two camps
      • Not necessary to do in class
    • Veterans leading:
      • Didn’t like it because students thought that the Veterans were there to “run the show.”
      • The whole idea was: You take 4 new students and 1 veteran in the group to help them
      • There were issues with the way it actually functioned; need to remind veterans to engage in debate
    • Brain-drain in MUN
      • Moving forward, how do we avoid this in the future
    • BarMUN
      • Generally agreed that it is not a good conference
      • Not wanting to be involved in the future
    • General comment:
      • Thought that the general structure was very helpful
      • Good chairing
      • Need assignments to give BOD members, actual items to be working on; keep them engaged in the process
  • Topic Guides:
    • Info sessions: having vs. not having
    • Need to have a debate regarding how the topic guides should be
    • Much disagreement between BOD, E-Board and past members (or E-Board members).
    • 1: What are the goals
    • 2: How much knowledge are we giving and how much are we requiring outside of class/club
    • 3: What each members’ role is in the “topic guide”
    • We are not prepared to weigh through this subject → We should plan ahead to speak of this, set an allotted time.
    • Need to think of feasible times to complete and send out
      • Need consistency
  • NATO tryout assignments:
    • Problem:
      • The number of tryouts has more than doubled – 38
      • 28 countries in NATO, picked up another 4 countries that bring it to 32
  • NATO tryout topics:
    • Can get it to Professor by Thursday evening.
    • Do not need to be too detailed
    • Discussion on topics for tryouts ensued
    • Final thoughts: To add additional countries, and explain rubric
      • Bosnia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Georgia → need to add another 6 countries
  • Japan:
    • Professor’s dialogue was accepted
    • Would like to include members of IRC to the Japan Dialogue
    • Need members of BOD to participate or aid
