Where is she now?
I have been accepted to the University of Gadjah Mada in Jogjakarta, Indonesia, where I am enrolled in the Indonesian Language and Culture Learning Service Program beginning in September. This intensive language course will prepare and guide me through my current academic endeavors to achieve a master’s degree in Southeast Asian studies. In the long run, I aspire to work in Indonesia in order to acquire a greater understanding of the country’s current state and how they are responding towards deep-seated environmental and social justice issues.
Experiences in IAF:
My enrollment in the IAF major allowed me to advance my knowledge in subjects of personal interest while traveling and learning everything from firsthand experience. The dialogues and co-ops have especially allowed me to develop and foster my passion in Southeast Asia’s developing world. The programs were an excellent opportunity for me to continue learning and exposing myself to international politics and diplomatic professions. Taking classes and working in this specific field enabled me to link classwork with existing realities and establish a greater understanding of what current issues reside at the forefront. Because of this major I have become the person I am today, someone who appreciates new experiences and is keen on continuously learning from others. I am certain that by being an IAF major and constantly traveling while working allowed me to be more self-aware and expand my worldview.
Advice for current or incoming students:
My advice would be to take advantage of all the programs that Northeastern offers. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel extensively and learn everything first-hand. I believe that actively learning in the field through experiential education is an extremely effective way of understanding the material taught in the classroom. Immerse yourself in all the cultures and leave your comfort zones behind. This is the time to explore what the world has to offer you and Northeastern is at the forefront of supporting this style of education, as is evidenced in their vast global network.
