INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS PROGRAM WELCOMES NEW DIRECTOR!

After 16 years under the leadership of Professor Denis Sullivan, the International Affairs Program has a new director!

Dr. Valentine Moghadam, professor of sociology and former director of Women's Studies at Purdue University, is joining the International Affairs program as director beginning in January 2012. Read her profile here

FALL 2011 OPEN CLASSROOM LECTURE SERIES: AMERICA, ISLAM & THE MIDDLE EAST

In Fall 2011, the Northeastern Middle East Center for Peace, Culture and Development; and The School of Journalism presented a semester-long Open Classroom titled American, Islam and the Middle East. This course was open to the public and focused on America's Engagement with the Muslim World, and course instructors and lecturers investigated the traditions, cultures and contemporary politics of the countries in the Middle East. Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Syria, and Egypt received significant attention in this course. To view videos of the lectures, and explore posted literature and resources, please visit our webpage here.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS FORUM

On October 17th, the International Affairs Program faculty and staff held a forum in Blackman Auditorium to announce new developments in the program and to give students a venue in which to offer suggestions for the future of the program.

An Observer of the Global Scene

"As part of a co-op with the NATO Defense College, in Rome, Italy, Northeastern student Miguel de Corral penned four editorials on the Arab Spring, encompassing the recent wave of political protests and demonstrations that have swept through Egypt, Libya, Syria and Tunisia." From Undergraduate to Global Policy Document

"It's not often than an undergraduate term paper turns into an internationally circulated policy document. But that is exactly what happened to Tori Porell, a sophomore international affairs major at Northeastern University, who is wrapping up a six-month co-op at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) in Switzerland." Discovering the Middle East

On May 11th, 32 Arabic, Photography and Journalism students embarked on a trip to the Middle East. Originally intended for Egypt, this program in Jordan and Turkey is giving students a glimpse into not just the political changes taking place on a daily basis, but also insights into the diversity and beauty of the region. They are recording their thoughts and reflections in an ongoing blog. Read their stories here

Roaming the Globe

In January 2011, student Ali Wolf left the United States for an international coop opportunity with DEPDC/GMS in Thailand. Since then she has been documenting her adventures in her blog. Follow her experiences here

Welcome to the International Affairs Program website. International Affairs is housed within the College of Social Sciences & Humanities and a part of the School of Social Science, Urban Affairs and Public Policy.

The dynamic images displayed on the International Affairs website were all taken by International Affairs students, alumni, faculty, and staff. Our students travel to a variety of international destinations and take advantage of unique experiences both on campus and abroad.

We encourage International Affairs majors to spend as much time as possible away from campus...either through co-op, study abroad, internatioanal internships, or Dialogue of Civilizations programs.
