Research and Teaching News:Dr. Denise Garcia will be one of the lecturers at Cornell’s University Course on International Security that will take place at the Italian Alps in January. From there, she will go to the United Nations University in Tokyo as part of her sabbatical work.

Dr. Valentine M. Moghadam, Director of the International Affairs Program and Professor of Sociology, has given several invited presentations on the Arab Spring. Her most recent presentations were:
- “Engendering Democracy after the Arab Spring”, presented at the Program Middle East Conference 2012, University of Oslo, Norway, 7-8 May 2012;
- “The Gender of Democracy: Why It Matters”, presented at the international conference, Democratic Transition and Development in the Arab World, Program on Arab Reform and Democracy, Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law, Stanford University, 26-28 April 2012;
- “What is Democracy? Promises and Perils after the Arab Spring.” Presented at the international conference, Seasons of the Arab Spring, University of Pittsburgh, 29-30 March 2012.
What Will Become of Egypt's Elections?
After a week of clashes with the military council, Egyptians cast their ballots in the first parliamentary elections since Hosni Mubarak was removed from power. The Northeastern news asked Professor of Political Science Denis Sullivan, director of Northeastern’s Middle East Center for Peace, Culture and Development, to assess this historic event, the potential roadblocks that remain in the election process and what a legitimate and successful election would mean for the region. Egypt: Revolution at Hand?
Egypt is undergoing a major social and political transformation perhaps even of a revolutionary nature. This process, characterized by mass, popular protests (largely nonviolent) has been cause for much speculation and collective head-scratching by those watching from the sidelines. Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians have taken to the streets in the last several days calling for the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak and his government, dominated by his National Democratic Party. Journalists and regional analysts have raised several excellent questions, for which there are frequently a lack of definitive answers. Here are our own observations.
