Blackboard 9 Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

  1. How do I add content to my course now?
    You no longer have to go through the Control Panel. Now, you navigate directly to the area in your course into which you want to add content (e.g. Course Material) and toggle the “Edit Mode” button at the upper-right to “ON”. Then you can add content using the blue buttons at the top.

  2. How do I make my course available to students?
    Click into your course site, then at the lower left, click Customize > Properties > Set Availability YES > Submit. View a demonstration video here. Please also remember to go into your previous term courses and mark them unavailable to remove them from the students’ views.

Student FAQs

  1. Why don’t I see all my courses listed?
    You will only see courses you are enrolled in with the NU Registrar that your instructor has made available in Blackboard. If you are enrolled in a course and don’t see it listed in Blackboard, contact your instructor.

  1. What are the computer requirements for Blackboard 9.1?
    Blackboard has updated its browser and system compatibility, which means some older versions of browsers and operating systems are no longer supported. Be sure to check the Supported Browsers & Operating Systems page to make sure your computer is sufficiently up-to-date. If you are uncertain how to check your computer for this information, please call the Help Desk at 617.373.4357 (xHELP).
  2. Why did we upgrade to Blackboard 9.1?
    We upgraded to 9.1 because of the enhanced functionality listed below:

    • New collaboration tools
    • Improved accessibility for students with disabilities
    • Updated Web 2.0 look and feel
    • Notification dashboard for students and faculty
    • Better compatibility with newer browsers

    In addition, our current version of Blackboard is no longer supported by Blackboard.

  1. What training and support is available for faculty?
    Information Technology Services will be offering instructor-led classroom sessions on campus in October. Check the ITS Training Schedule for class listings and to sign up. This Blackboard 9 Preview website also has a number of documents and tutorials on using the new version.
