Captioning addresses compliance issues and is beneficial to students with hearing impairment, where English is not their first language, and with learning disabilities.
Closed captioning allows viewer flexibility, especially with the increasing popularity of mobile devices where students may be in locations where access to the audio is limited. Captioning allows them to view content where audio may not be allowed, such as libraries.
Closed captioning can improve comprehension and retention for all students.
Faculty can submit a request for captioning through their Tegrity course site. At the bottom of the instructor course view page click on the ‘Choose An Action …’ dropdown menu and click on ‘Automatically Caption.’ In addition, a request form must be filled out and submitted at https://northeastern.service-now.com. Click Service Catalog on the left, then click on Closed Captioning under Presentation Support Services. The request will be forwarded for budget and copyright approval. Captioned recordings normally will be returned within three days after approval. The captioned recording will be returned to and appear on the instructor’s Tegrity course page.
For DVD captioning, email your request to firstname.lastname@example.org
