Microsoft has released a new version of Microsoft Office for the Mac. Version 2011, which will be available for use on all Mac-based Northeastern computers beginning January 10th 2011, supports several new features, including Microsoft Outlook for the Mac, a ribbon user interface as in Office 2007/2010, a formula builder for Excel, and SmartArt graphics for PowerPoint.
Office for Mac 2011 will be available to all faculty and staff for installation on Northeastern-owned computers by contacting the ITS Service Desk at x4357 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Once you obtain Office for Mac 2011, you may review the instructions on How to Install Office for Mac 2011, and see the Office Mac 2011 page on this website for more information. Office for Mac 2011 will also come standard with the new NUnet managed MacOS environment being released in Spring 2011. Faculty and staff will also be able to purchase Office for Mac 2011 for their home computer at a reduced rate through a special Work At Home Use Program. Once logged in, the website will prompt the user to check their Northeastern University faculty/staff email to access the Microsoft Home Use Program store. To select Office for Mac 2011, the customer should click on “buy now”, and then click on “Learn More” beside its image.
The minimum standard configuration for Mac computers to run Office for Mac 2011 is an Intel processor, Mac OS X V10.5.8 or later, 1 GB or RAM, and 2.5 GB of available hard disk space.
Office for Mac 2011 includes the new Outlook for Mac with a similar look and feel to the current versions of Outlook for Windows. You will be able to access your faculty/staff Northeastern email using Outlook on a Mac in the same way that you access it on a Windows PC. For more information, see the instructions on How To Set Up Outlook for Mac 2011. Outlook for the Mac also supports migration of account information from Entourage. Entourage users can continue to use this application concurrently with Outlook.
Because files in Office 2008 and Office for Mac 2011 are in the same format, your 2010 files can be opened, edited and saved in Office for Mac 2011. If you share files with colleagues who are still using 2008, they will be able to open, edit and save your Office for Mac 2011 versions.
