Beginning on November 22, 2010, all newly ordered Dell PCs for faculty and staff uses will come with Windows 7 as the new default operating system and the Windows 7 NUnet image, including Office 2010, preinstalled. This configuration has been thoroughly tested over the past few months by beta-testers from Information Technology Services and others across the University. Windows 7 provides a new graphical user interface and improved search and usability features over previous releases of Windows. Visit the Microsoft website for a detailed list of new features in Windows 7.
Please note that migrating an existing Windows XP computer to Windows 7 is a very involved process requiring significant preparation and pre-planning. Migration requires data to be backed up, the computer wiped and reinstalled, and data restored. If you do not need the features specific to Windows 7, we recommend that you remain on XP in the near term. Information Technology Services is developing assisted migration plans which will be announced in the future.
The minimum requirements for running Windows 7 on your computer are a 1GHz processor and 2 GB RAM. A video card that supports DirectX 10 and has 128MB or more of RAM may be required for some graphics applications and Windows 7 features. A list of currently supported Northeastern computer models is available on this website.
During the break between Fall and Spring semesters, Windows 7 and Office 2010 will be installed in all IS-managed computer labs (InfoCommons I and II, 015 Behrakis, and 054 Dodge), on all E-Bar, Kiosk, and Quick Print computers, and in all classrooms with installed computers. Two banks along the back of the room in Infocommons I are already running Windows 7; faculty and staff who wish to try out the new environment are encouraged to visit InfoCommons and use one of these computers.
