A back up primer – how to get started

Purchasing a new computer or upgrading an operating system (OS) on a desktop or laptop computer often impacts programs and files you use on your current system. Impact can range from rendering some older applications unusable because they are incompatible with the new OS to completely erasing all files on your computer. If you are getting a new computer or if you would like to upgrade the operating system on your current model, the first step in the process is to back up your files.

To back up your files, select a storage medium, select the files you want to save, and then perform the file transfer. Then you will need to contact the Service Desk at 617.373.4357 (xHELP) to request assistance to install the newest NUnet image for your Windows or Macintosh machine. If you have any questions and/or are not sure about how to back up your machine, please call the Service Desk for assistance.
