Current Trends in Drug Abuse Research Fifth Annual Symposium

Invited speakers are renowned scientists from academia, clinical medicine, and industry. The keynote speaker will be Dr. David Shurtleff, director of the Division of Basic Neuroscience & Behavioral Research National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Presentations include topics such as structure-based drug discovery using antibody-hapten complexes, targeting of molecular scaffolds, opioid receptors and the dopamine transporter as targets for the pharmacotherapy of cocaine abuse, substance abuse in HIV patients, discovery and neuropharmacology of a partial agonist for smoking cessation, metabolomic and proteomic characterization of the endocannabinoid system, cannabinoid regulation of hematopoiesis, adolescent drug abuse and the development of the aggressive phenotype, and imaging and drug discovery.

Professor Alexandros Makriyannis, Director of the Center for Drug Discovery, Bouvé College, speaking on the development of novel therapeutic agents for the treatment of obesity and metabolic disorders.

Doctor Jessica Blom-Hoffman, School of Health Professions, Bouvé College, speaking on the design, implementation and outcome evaluation of a fruit and vegetable promotion program conducted at four Boston Public Schools.

Professor Richard Daynard, School of Law, speaking on the public health “dimensions” of the obesity epidemic, as well as its causes and possible cures.

Prof. Mukerjee Bio

The University Lectureship was established in 1964 on the recommendation of the Faculty Senate. In 1979, it was renamed in tribute to the late Robert D. Klein, Professor of Mathematics, Chairman of the Faculty Senate Agenda Committee, and Vice Chairman of the Faculty Senate.

The primary purpose of the award is to allow the University to honor a member of the professoriate who has contributed with distinction to his or her field of study and, via the University Lecture, to share the fruits of that scholarship with the University community and the general public.
