Giving With Purpose
Together with the Learning by Giving Foundation, The Social Impact Lab at Northeastern University has awarded $150,000 in grants to thirty nonprofit organizations across the U.S. through the 2014 iteration of Giving With Purpose, the world’s first massive open online course (MOOC) on effective charitable giving. Forty organizations received $130,000 in grants when the course was first offered in 2013.
Thousands of students around the world have now taken Giving With Purpose to become more purposeful givers and engage more effectively with nonprofit organizations in their communities. Students engage in collective grant making by nominating and assessing nonprofit organizations in their communities using principles taught in the course.
Students register in the MOOC individually or as part of a team. In 2014, three organizations, Positive Tracks, the American Public Health Association (APHA), and the Red Sox Foundation, sponsored teams whose members collaborated in choosing some of the grantees.
Authored by the Lab’s Director, Rebecca Riccio, Giving With Purpose include lectures, interactive exercises, group discussions, and interviews with prominent philanthropists Warren Buffett, Doris Buffet, Patrick Dempsey, Cal Ripken, Jr., Soledad O’Brien, Tom Werner, and Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield (Ben and Jerry).
