Blog Like an Egyptian
Northeastern journalists are good—so good they scooped the New York Times.
During a Dialogue of Civilizations trip to the Middle East, 25 journalism students blogged as a class. They covered the local music scene in Cairo and war-torn territories in Syria, and debuted an exclusive, controversial interview with an Egyptian political prisoner, which was later referenced in a Times piece. Recently, an article two students penned was featured in the Boston Globe.
That not only reinforced their journalism skills, but proved a learning experience much larger in scope.
“So much of the world’s news is pouring out of the Middle East, and yet we know so little about it,” says senior journalism major Dani Capalbo. “There’s no better way to experience a region than with an eye out specifically for stories, because you’re constantly tuned into details. The class [which covered international journalism and international affairs] was a cool way to immerse ourselves and get a sense of the culture and society.”
