Abstract:   Basic examples of Lie group actions on smooth compact manifolds arise from algebraic and arithmetic constructions. For the case of actions of a non-compact simple Lie group, we discuss the presence of arithmetic structures that appear in general classes of actions. In particular, we discuss questions concerning the arithmetic nature of the fundamental group of the manifold.
