Abstract: On the triple product of a projective algebraic curve, B. Gross and C. Schoen constructed a homologically trivial cycle as a linear combination of the diagonal and partial diagonals. The height of such a cycle is a new invariant of the curve when the base field is a global field. I will explain some proved or conjectured formulae for this invariant, and some applications to algebraic geometry and number theory.
