Abstract:  In 1980 R. Bott gave a series of lectures on Morse theory, old and new, which ended with a conjectured application, due to Atiyah and Bott, of equivariant Morse theory to the Yang-Mills functional. We review developments in equivariant Morse theory since that time, ending with a new approach to Morse theory in the case studied by Atiyah and Bott.
