Abstract: Contact and symplectic structures play prominent role in studying smooth topological properties of manifolds. Using surgery methods we identify an obstruction for a manifold to admit a special type (Stein fillable) contact structure, and apply this obstruction class to understand the Stein fillability property better. This is joint work with Jonathan Bowden and Diarmuid Crowley.
