Abstract:   The geometry and topology of surfaces have played an important role in the theory of 3-manifolds, and particularly in the study of constructions and deformations of hyperbolic structures. I will describe how geometric control of hyperbolic 3-manifolds is obtained from Thurston's pleated surfaces and from Teichmuller theory, and will relate this to the rigidity and classification problems, and to recent progress and remaining questions about Heegaard splittings.
