Abstract:   The Fontaine-Mazur conjecture describes which p-adic representations of the Galois group of Q ought to arise from algebraic geometry. Combined with the conjectures of Langlands, it predicts these representations should arise from automorphic forms. I will explain the statement of the conjecture and report on progress in the two dimensional case.
