Boston: Cultural and Intellectual Hub

Boston is considered one of the world’s leading centers of higher education, and Northeastern University is located in downtown Boston right in the heart of that hub. The Greater Boston region boasts 75 colleges and universities employing more than 50,000 full- and part-time faculty and staff, and offering a wealth of opportunities for intellectual, artistic, and entrepreneurial collaboration and innovation. Some of the finest research and cultural resources—from first-class university and city libraries to world-class lectures and symposia to renowned museums and theaters—are part of the fabric of Boston. And, as part of the Boston Consortium for Higher Learning, Northeastern University faculty members have unprecedented opportunities to pursue interdisciplinary projects with researchers and faculty from the other participating institutions.

Massachusetts has the highest percentage of scientists and engineers of the leading technology states. Boston’s eight research universities, all within a nine-mile radius of the state capitol, attract more than $1.5 billion a year in research contracts and grants. University research has also played a significant role in shaping economic and social policies, ranging from revenue sharing and housing strategy to drug abuse treatment and prevention programs.

In terms of lifestyle, Boston has a great deal to offer. With a population of nearly 600,000, the city combines the best of urban and campus living: the diverse, cosmopolitan, and cutting-edge vibe of a major city complemented by the neighborhood flavor of a safe and livable town. The green quads and acclaimed architecture on Northeastern’s 73 acres provide a traditional campus experience within our urban setting. And just a two-hour drive away are the beaches of Cape Cod and Rhode Island and the hiking and skiing trails of New Hampshire and Vermont.
