Sustainable First-year Huskies

Sustainability. It's a more than just a buzz word - it's a concept that should be crucial to any college student, since it'll be your world in 20/20! (Husky EYES reference...get it?!)
Challenge yourself While I think we can all agree that sustainability is important, it can be a daunting task to figure out what you can do to make a difference. You don't have to stop showering or using electrical appliances to make a really contribution. So here are five quick and easy ways you can make a difference without completely altering your lifestyle!
1. Flip the Off Switch Regularly!
Do you really need your TV blasting, iHome playing, and four lights on while you are at class? I think not. By simply turning off your electronic devices when you are not in the room you can save a ton of electrical energy (and you won't even notice a change!)
2. Naptime for your Laptop!
Make sure your computer is set to sleep mode (directions can be found online). Now when your computer is inactive for a period of time it will slip into sleep mode and reduce its energy consumption. This is not only better for your computer, but again you're saving energy. Also, turn your computer off at night - you don't need it on anyway.
3. Unplug It!
Did you know that by merely having an electrical device plugged into the wall it is using energy? Well, it's true! By unplugging appliances that you're not using you can save a ton of energy! Just remember to keep the alarm clock plugged in!
4. Shower Power!
I'm not going to tell you not to shower (trust me your friends and roommate appreciate you smelling fresh). However, by taking slightly shorter showers you can save hundreds of gallons of water per year. Just shave a minute or two off your time, and you're making a major impact. While we're talking about water, think about turning the faucet off while you're brushing your teeth or shaving - there's no real need to keep it running constantly. Also, if you notice a leak in your bathroom put in a work order immediately (www.workreq.neu.edu) as you'll play a key role in helping the environment.
5.Ugh...Laundry!
Everyone hates laundry - but here are a few tips to make the experience a bit more sustainable. Only doing full loads of laundry will help save water and electricity, and washing in cold will also help. Letting your clothes air dry will save a ton of energy, plus you don't have to worry about anything shrinking or color fading! Score!
I hope you've realized that you can make a difference with just a few minor adjustments to your daily routine. If you're really interested in learning more about sustainability, you should check out the Husky Energy Action Team (HEAT) at www.heat.neu.edu.
And remember... green is the new Black!
