Negotiation - Creating a Win-Win Solution
Rationale:
The purpose of this session is to provide students with the skills to effectively negotiate with people in an equal or higher position with the result of achieving a win-win solution while fostering positive relationships.
Description:
Students will evaluate themselves on their approach and style to negotiation as well as identify their concerns for negotiation. Students should practice their communication skills throughout this seminar, in hopes that this will carry over outside of the session as well as understand why it is important to seek a win-win solution vs. a win-lose solution.
This session will include:
- An introduction to negotiation and the benefits of creating a win-win outcome vs. a win-lose outcome.
- Types of negotiation and negotiation techniques and styles (Integrated vs. Distributive.
- The stages of negotiation (planning, negotiation, assessment)
- Common misconceptions about negotiation and traps to watch out for and avoid.
- Activity surrounding the concepts of integrated negotiation.
- Brief overview of mediation / conflict resolution, tied in with negotiation.
Learning Outcomes:
- Students will assess how considerate they are as a roommate.
- Students will discuss the various reasons that conflict arises between roommates.
- Students will employ effective methods of communicating with their roommate(s).
- Students will know how to utilize their Residential Life staff when dealing with conflict.
- Students will formulate their own roommate agreement.
