Northeastern Students4Giving 2013 Request for Proposals
Northeastern Students4Giving (NS4G) is requesting proposals for its 2013 funding cycle. This year, students will award grants in two areas:
Post-incarceration Reintegration
During the 2013 funding cycle, program funding will be provided to an organization working in the area of post-incarceration reintegration. This grant is intended to address the persistent challenges associated with reintegration as well as those created by the high number of drug-related convictions recently vacated in Massachusetts. We seek to fund an organization that helps formerly incarcerated individuals reduce their risk of recidivism, successfully re-engage with their families and community, and pursue a personal path to success. We will favor applications from organizations working collaboratively with public agencies, other nonprofit organizations, and other stakeholders to provide complementary services addressing issues such as gang affiliation, job readiness, housing, financial management, mental health, compliance with court-mandated requirements, substance abuse, education, and relationships with family and friends. These examples are illustrative, not exhaustive.

Community Mental Health
During the 2013 funding cycle, operating, program, or capacity building funding will be provided to an organization working in the area of community mental health. In particular, we seek to fund an organization working to overcome economic, social, and cultural barriers to mental health care access in low-income, under-served or marginalized communities. Such barriers may include, but are not limited to language, immigration status, lack of culturally appropriate services, stigma, lack of health insurance, lack of awareness, and logistical challenges such as transportation or child care. We will consider clinical services (e.g., individual counseling) and community-based approaches (e.g., education, awareness building) provided they are geared toward making mental health care more accessible in our target communities.

Background
NS4G is a philanthropy education program that enables students to make a positive and lasting impact in the communities where we live and learn through grant making. We make grants to community-based nonprofit organizations that address critical economic and social challenges facing the Boston neighborhoods of Mission Hill, Fenway, Roxbury, and the South End. Through our grantmaking and volunteer work, we further strengthen the relationship between the Northeastern University community, our grantees, and the neighborhoods they serve.
Since 2008, students have used a consensus-based approach to manage all stages of the NS4G funding cycle, from conducting needs assessments through making grant determinations. Past funding priorities have included youth violence, households at risk due to financial insecurity, and positive youth development. Our philanthropy is informed by coursework in human services and nonprofit management as well as many experiences students have had working and volunteering in the nonprofit sector. NS4G is advised by NS4G Program Director Rebecca Riccio and Human Services Director Lori Gardinier, MSW, PhD. Our decision making is completely independent of any other relationships that applicants may have with the university.
