Twenty-First Century Chain of Change
The John D. O’Bryant African American Institute and the Humanities Center at Northeastern University co-sponsored the conference Twenty-First Century Chain of Change on Friday, March 26, 2010.
8:45AM - 3:15PM, The Amilcar Cabral Memorial Student Center at 40 Leon St., West Village F, Boston, MA 02115
The new millennium has ushered in an abundance of opportunities for urban communities as well as an ever-growing and complex array of challenges to address issues of need amongst various communities: economic development, social services, educational advancement, racial and ethnic harmony. Historical debates and efforts to address the persistent issues of low-income and underserved communities have produced a plethora of moderately to unsuccessful attempts at empowerment. With the election of President Barack Obama, the public dialogue and debate about how to best support community and economic development endeavors has shifted from the individual’s responsibility to what role the government should play. This shift in public deliberation coupled with a lack of clarity regarding social and economic development presents a rare occasion and opportunity to help define the direction of community and economic development in the New Era. Community and economic development continue to evolve and adapt. This gathering affords both the academic and practitioner the chance to contribute to the public discourse on what will community and economic development look like in the 21st century.
