Artists and Practitioners in Residence Program
This program brings to campus highly innovative individuals whose work spans many different disciplines for three to five day residencies to create interdisciplinary dialogue throughout the community. The program's first resident was Dr. Lisa Sanders, author of the "Diagnosis" column for the New York Times and technical advisor to the television show House. Other residencies have hosted WGBH's Callie Crossley and acclaimed actor Stephen Lang, best known for his role in Avatar.Conversations @ 34
Each year the Humanities Center invites a distinguished panel of scholars, artists, and practitioners to have a conversation on an interdisciplinary theme. Past panelists have included actress and performance artist Anna Deavere Smith and Harvard University Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
Humanities Center Conferences
The Humanities Center collaborates on a regular basis with other organizations on campus to host conferences and symposiums. A partnership with the John D. O'Bryant African American Institute, for example, has resulted in 2010's "Twenty-First Century Chain of Change" and "American Identity in the Age of Obama," scheduled for Spring 2011.
Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Forum
In a series of meetings, each featuring graduate student guest speakers, this forum provides the opportunity for students from across disciplines to share their work with one another.
Intersections: From Fenway to Figueroa
"Intersections" is a national partnership between the Northeastern University Humanities Center and the Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities and the University of Southern California. By organizing a panel discussion based upon an annual theme, the partnership hopes to not only enrich the Northeastern community, but to connect students and thinkers from Boston and California on the web.
Working Groups
The Humanities Center's working groups bring together scholars, artists, activists, and practitioners, both within and outside the university community, around a common theme of interest. The themes, which always invite interdisciplinarity, range from Sexualities to Cosmic Evolution Theory.
