Recruitment & Hiring

Selecting the right person for a position in your organization is one of the most important decisions you will make as a manager.  Your HR consultant can be an important resource to you to determine the right approach and develop a customized recruitment plan.  You can gain a basic understanding of the recruiting process at Northeastern by reviewing the following information.

Creating or Updating a Job Description

Before you begin recruiting, it is important to define the skills, qualifications and experience you are looking for in your new hire.  Take this opportunity to review the existing job description to ensure that it describes the current requirements of the position.  If it doesn’t meet your needs, you can work with your HR consultant and the Compensation staff to determine the responsibilities for the position, the grade level, and the appropriate salary range.

At the end of this section, you can follow the links to access the job description forms for the various types of jobs at Northeastern.

Where to Begin

Northeastern uses Banner HR and PeopleAdmin to manage our HR and Payrolls functions, including the recruitment and hiring processes.  Your Key Contact has been given access to Banner HR and PeopleAdmin for managing these processes and s/he will give you instructions as to how to proceed when you need to fill an open position. However, you should be aware of some general information about the recruitment process at Northeastern:

  • Before your position can be posted, it must have been approved by your college’s dean or your area’s senior vice president and the budget office must have confirmed that the position is funded.
  • All staff positions are posted internally for 10 days before external applicants can be hired.  If you hire an internal candidate, the position only needs to be posted for 10 days.  After that, positions must be posted for 20 additional days before the position can be filled.
  • All positions are automatically posted on these websites:  www.HigherEdJobs.com; www.InsideHigherEd.com; www.IMDiversity.com; and NewEnglandHERC.org.
  • The Office of Institutional Diveristy and Equity can help you identify places to post your position to ensure that you have a diverse candidate pool.
  • Your Key Contact can give you access to PeopleAdmin, the University’s online recruitment and hiring tool, to make it easy for you to review resumes and arrange for interviews.
