Holidays

Northeastern provides benefits-eligible faculty and staff with paid holidays each year, one of which is a floating holiday. On floating holidays, the university remains open and some employees are required to work. If you are required to work, you can enjoy a holiday on a day of your choice during the 30 days preceding or following the floating holiday.

To be paid for a holiday, a faculty or staff member must be in a benefits eligible, paid status on the working days before and after the holiday.

Holidays are:

  • New Year's Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Presidents Day
  • Patriots Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day (floating holiday)
  • Columbus Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • Friday after Thanksgiving
  • Christmas

In addition, it has been the university's practice to grant time off during the holiday season in December. This time off is announced in advance each year.

The university provides salary protection for employees who are unable to work because of an illness or injury. The amount of sick time varies based on position and length of service. Personal Time and Other Paid Time Off

Personal Time

Personal time allows employees time to take care of personal needs. This benefit allows the use of up to three days of accrued sick time annually from the anniversary date of employment. This time off must be pre-arranged with the department heads and should not be used in conjunction with vacation time or holidays. Personal time is not cumulative and the days should not be taken consecutively.

Bereavement

If a member of an employee’s immediate family dies, Northeastern provides paid time off, generally not exceeding three days. Members of the immediate family include parent, brother, sister, spouse, same-sex spousal equivalent, child, grandparent, parent-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law.

Holy Days

Northeastern respects the religious beliefs of faculty and staff and their desire to observe their accepted religious customs and holy days. The university allows reasonable time off without adjustment to pay to attend religious observances on generally recognized holy days, provided this does not disrupt academic schedules or administrative responsibilities.

Jury Duty

If employees are selected for jury duty, the university will pay the difference between regular salary and payment received for jury duty, exclusive of travel allowance. Employees must submit any payment received from the court along with the Record of Performance provided by the court to the HRM/Payroll Service Center at 250 Columbus Place.

Voting in Elections

The University urges employees to exercise their voting privileges in local, state and national elections. The university does not grant time off for voting if the polls are open sufficiently early or late for employees to vote before or after work hours. However, employees who do not have sufficient time to get to the polls before or after work hours will be allowed up to two hours of time off for voting. Employees must notify their supervisor at least 24 hours in advance of an expected absence.

Flexible Summer Work Schedule & July 4th Holiday

During the summer of 2012, the Flexible Summer Work Schedule will run from June 11 through August 10, 2012. All offices will remain open, at a minimum, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

General guidelines are outlined below so that this program assures high productivity and service to students and other constituencies throughout the summer while providing staff, if approved by their supervisor, to have some flexibility in their work schedule during 4 weeks.  Although general guidelines are provided, it is important to note that department managers will determine how to implement a flex schedule that most effectively works for their unit.

  • Every employee is not automatically entitled to a flexible summer work schedule.  Rather, permission is at the discretion of the manager after considering staffing needs for the respective department
  • Employees authorized to work a flexible summer work schedule will work a compressed four-day work week during four of the weeks between June 11 and August 10, as arranged with their manager.  In other words, participating employees will work their full number of weekly hours, but in four rather than five days.
  • Departments will determine individual work schedules so that all staff will fulfill their responsibilities during flex weeks and that all service needs are met.

As previously announced, the University will be closed Wednesday, July 4th.  During the remainder of the week beginning Monday, July 2nd through Friday, July 6th, all employees will operate on a regular work schedule.
