About HRM

The role of HRM is to design, develop and continually refine a comprehensive human resources management program for Northeastern University.  The goal of this program is to attract, reward and retain a high-quality faculty and staff to meet the University’s educational mission.

Human Resources Management encompasses these five areas:  benefits; compensation; employment and employee relations; human resources information systems; and training and development.

Employment/Employee Relations

Our HR Consultants work with department managers on a wide range of employee relations issues including recruitment strategies, hiring practices, performance management and harassment or discrimination concerns. The HR consultants also advise individual employees to help resolve conflicts, promote effective working relationships and provide guidance regarding career advancement.

The Employment group is responsible for the recruitment of all office support, technical, service, crafts and trades staff.  Our Employment Representative also partners with a variety of workforce development agencies in the Boston area to prepare trainees for job readiness.  She also places interns and students from the community in worksites across campus.

Benefits

Our Benefits area administers a comprehensive and competitive employee benefits program for all full-time regular faculty staff including medical plans, a dental plan, Medical and Dependent-Care Reimbursement Accounts, Retirement Plans, Life Insurance Benefits, Disability Programs, and Tuition Reimbursement.  The group also administers all leaves of absence, develops communications programs to educate faculty and staff about our benefits, and ensures compliance with all federal, state and IRS regulations.

Compensation

Our Compensation area is responsible for the design, development and administration of a competitive compensation program for all staff.  This includes the development of salary ranges and administration of performance appraisal programs.  The staff in Compensation also consults with department managers on job design related to reorganization and restructuring.

Training and Development

This area provides management development and training programs that offer both Northeastern-specific and general professional development to all members of the University community.  The unit also managed the orientation program for all new full-time faculty and staff and oversees management orientation for all new managers.

HR Systems and Operations

The HR Systems and Operations group is responsible for the PeopleSoft HRMS application, HR Operations, Payroll Operations and the HR/Payroll Service Center. Specifically, this group manages all HR transactions for faculty and staff related to hires, promotions, salary changes/adjustments and terminations; provides customer support for the HRM organization via the HR/Payroll Service Center; provides payroll and tax services to all faculty, staff and paid students; and manages the PeopleSoft application and related functionality including eRecruit and hrConnect.
