Typical Work Week

Residence Directors (RDs) spent time in the residential communities, supervising, advising and working with residents. Throughout the day, RDs can be found throughout campus serving on department and University committees, task forces and special projects. RDs are provided with pagers so that they can continue to be available to assist their community and respond to students as needed. Tuesday afternoons are traditionally reserved for alternating Department meetings and area meetings. Northeastern University observes a work week Monday-Friday beginning at 8:30AM and ending at 4:30PM. As a co-op institution, our students traditionally spend six months in classes and six months working in a co-op position. RDs meet with their staff Tuesday nights and set aside two hours for development and general business. To accommodate the needs of our unique student community, RDs meet regularly with students in the evening hours.

What is the structure of the residence hall conduct process and the RD's role in adjudicating violations?

Residential Life works along with the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution to assist in the adjudication process. As hearing officers, RDs are assigned cases that occur throughout campus where there are alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct or Guide to Residence Life. The student conduct process is one grounded in consistency, with a framework within which educational conversations occur. This framework also guides the decision making and sanctioning process for hearing officers. Inactive and active sanction options are available to hearing officers. Minimum sanction guidelines for alcohol and drug charges involve education coordinated through the Office of Prevention and Education. Northeastern utilizes Maxient database software to manage judicial records. 


Summer Assignments

Northeastern University is a vibrant campus year round. Our unique co-op structure contributes to a highly active summer environment. Traditionally, RDs serve in one of three primary summer positions or work on a designated special project over the course of the summer terms.

  • Open Building Residence Director - RDs serving in this role coordinate the administration and assist the students in their residential communities. There are two academic summer session terms. Roughly 2,000 of the Northeastern student population lives on campus throughout the summer.
  • Conference Housing Coordinator- RDs serving in this role work along with the Conference Housing and External Events staff to serve conference guests housed in Northeastern residential facilities. Northeastern University campus welcomes approximately 10-15 conference groups with over 3000 guests each summer. The conference program at Northeastern has much momentum and continues to grow and expand.
  • Orientation Housing Coordinator- RDs serving in this role work along with the New Student Orientation office to welcome incoming students and acclimate them to the Northeastern culture and community. Northeastern hosts approximately 10-15 orientations and approximately 6500 prospective students and parents over the summer orientation period.

Special project assignments are determined annually. Summer assignment placements are announced to the RD staff in the Spring term.

Each year, Spring RD building assignments are evaluated for the upcoming academic year and apartment and office relocation to restage staff takes place over the course of the summer.

Northeastern University has offered a flexible summer work schedule providing employees with four summer flex days to use throughout a specified time period in the summer. This program is evaluated annually and announced during the spring term. 


How are RD placements determined?

As a new employee to Northeastern, placements are determined based on candidate experience, University needs and vacancies on campus.

What is the pet policy for RDs?

For health and humanitarian reasons, no animals (other than fish) are allowed in residence facilities. Fish may be kept in student rooms in containers with a maximum capacity equal to or less than 25 gallons. Persons with disabilities should contact the Associate Dean for Cultural, Residential and Spiritual Life to make arrangements for trained service animals.

What about the dining plan?

RD’s are provided with a University meal plan which includes 19 meals per week and 8 guest passes each term. The meal plan is linked to the employee Husky card, and can be used at virtually any food-service venue on campus. In addition, RD’s receive $120.00 in Husky Dollars to be used at vendor locations on Northeastern’s campus and surrounding areas.
