Residential Life Title Descriptions:
Associate Dean & Director of Residential Life
The Director of Residential Life provides leadership and guidance for the entire department. The Director manages five Assistant Directors for Residential Life while directing departmental operations, overseeing the department budget, setting goals for the department, and establishing strategies for implementation. The Director helps to maintain a healthy, safe and secure environment within the University’s Residence Halls. The Director works collaboratively with several other departments and committees to develop programming, policies and procedures. The Director has a strong knowledge of crisis management and risk planning. The Director participates in the on-call duty rotation, including holidays and breaks throughout the year. The Director of Residential Life position requires a Master’s degree and should hold three to five years of related experience.
Assistant Directors of Residential Life
There are five Assistant Directors for Residential Life. All ADRL’s provide departmental direction and supervision for 19 Residence Directors in over 30 residence halls and leased properties. All ADRL’s collaborate with other University departments and work together to implement and enforce policies and regulations within residence halls. All ADRL’s help to plan, organize and coordinate student development programs within their area. All ADRL’s assist with training and advising of professional staff and work with their areas’ Residence Director to discuss goals, development and difficulties.
Residence Hall Director
The Residence Director (RD) is a full-time master’s level professional staff member in the Department of Residential Life and has direct responsibility for all student development functions. RDs are responsible for the effective administration of a community living environment, which is conducive to social and intellectual growth, and the academic success of resident students. RDs must work autonomously, exercise excellent judgment in supervision, emergency response, and policy interpretation and implementation.
Graduate Assistantships
The Graduate Assistant (GA) is a part-time professional staff member in the Department of Housing & Residential Life and is enrolled in a master’s degree program at Northeastern. The GA, while having administrative duties, is also responsible for working directly within Residential Life to support student staff and provide them with development opportunities. In addition, GA’s serve on a departmental committee, Graduate Assistant Growth Experience or (GAGE). This provides the GA’s with the opportunity to serve on a committee that provides a strong focus on the empowerment and professional development of the Graduate staff during their time with the department.
