Law Housing Application Process

Housing Eligibility

As full-time students enrolled in a law program at Northeastern, you can apply to live in campus housing. Because space is limited, housing is not guaranteed.

Northeastern does not have accommodations for married couples, spousal equivalents, or dependent children. You can obtain information about alternative housing from Off Campus Student Services.

Special First-Year Law Program
Because the academic calendar for first-year law students differs significantly from the graduate school calendar, we try to consolidate law students in apartment buildings located just two blocks from the law school, at 335 Huntington Avenue and 768 Columbus Avenue.

The former includes an elevator, a lobby intercom and security doors with key access. The latter features a lobby intercom and security doors with key access.

Each apartment is furnished with a bed, bureau, desk, and chair for each resident. All apartments have a kitchen table with chairs, a stove and a refrigerator. There is one telephone hookup and one cable hookup for each unit. All utilities are included except telephone and cable.

Housing styles include single efficiencies, two-bedroom apartments, and three-bedroom apartments. There are no living rooms or common areas in these apartments.

Each first-year law student signs a License Agreement covering three consecutive terms. Every upper-level law student signs a contract covering the academic year for the terms they are residing on campus. If the building reaches capacity, some law students may be housed in other NU housing.

Law Students New to On-Campus Housing

  • Step I: Complete the housing application

Law Students who would like to apply for university housing must submit a housing application by May 15, 2009.  Please indicate on the application all the terms for which you wish to apply.  You are also required to sign the 2009-2010 Residence Hall and Dining License Agreement at the time you apply for housing.

Once you have completed your application, you should return it to Housing & Residential Life. Our contact information is listed below.  International students should submit their application by fax or e-mail in order to avoid delays.

  • Step II: Housing Assignment Process

After the application deadline, housing applications will be randomly selected through a computer-generated program.  Students will either receive an offer for housing or be placed on a wait list for housing.

All students who applied will be notified of their application status during the week of May 18th.

Students who receive an offer for housing will be required to submit non-refundable Housing Deposits for the terms they requested no later than May 27, 2009.

Students who receive a wait list number will also be notified by mail at this time about their position on this list and will be provided with information about the process and next steps, as well as off-campus housing alternatives.

Student Rights and Responsibilities

All students living in space leased by Northeastern are bound to uphold the “Code of Conduct” as detailed in the University’s Student Handbook, as well as, the terms and conditions detailed in both the Guide to Residence Hall Living and the Residence Hall and Dining License Agreement.  Students whose behavior is not in accordance with these standards will be subject to disciplinary action.

At the time you receive your assignment letter, you will be provided with details of your move-in date and time.

Law Housing Options

Features in most of the apartment buildings include an intercom connection between each apartment and the lobby as well as front doors which are locked 24 hours a day with access for residents only.  Each apartment is furnished with a bed, bureau, desk, and chair for each resident.  All apartments have a kitchen table with chairs and one telephone and cable TV hook-up for the unit.  The kitchens have a stove and refrigerator provided. Living room furniture is provided in standard apartments.  All utilities are included, except telephone and cable TV.  You may access Northeastern’s e-mail and internet program through a modem and a telephone line.  ResNet is not available in leased properties.

Types of Apartments
The following descriptions will help illustrate what housing options are available.  All Northeastern apartments include utilities (except telephone and cable TV costs).

  • Studio Apartment - A single studio apartment with a kitchenette and bathroom.

Economy Living Arrangement
Economy apartments are standard-size units that have been converted to accommodate an additional person.  For example, the living room has been converted to a bedroom.  In some cases, a larger double apartment may be used by three roommates as an economy triple at a reduced price; the two people sharing a room would pay less than the person in the single.

  • Economy single bedroom - A single bedroom in a shared apartment with a kitchen and bathroom and no common living area.

Enhanced Living Arrangement
These room options are in apartments with either new or recently renovated amenities.  Some examples of additional amenities are dishwashers, garbage disposals, bathroom vanities, and central air conditioning in a 1-, 2-, 3- or 4- person apartment

  • Enhanced single bedroom with no living room - A single bedroom in a shared, new, or renovated apartment with a kitchen and bathroom but no common living area.

Residence Hall Accessibility
To make living on campus an option for law and law students who have disabilities, are Deaf/hard of hearing, or have chronic medical conditions, we have incorporated features in three apartment buildings.  Please note that although these buildings accommodate Law, graduate, and Undergraduate students (sophomore through seniors), your individual apartment will not include roommates who are undergraduate students.

To request an assignment that is accessible to your specific needs you will need to be registered with the Disability Resource Center. The DRC will evaluate as well as provide verification of your needs to The Department of Residential Life. For more information on this and other campus services, you may contact the Disability Resource Center at 20 Dodge Hall or call them at (617) 373-2675, or (617) 373-2730 (TTY), or fax at (617) 373-2542.
