An Artist’s Self-Portrait in Words
Featuring Samuel Bak
In an artistic career of over 70 years, Samuel Bak has had numerous exhibitions in museums, galleries, and universities throughout Europe, Israel, and the United States, including retrospectives at the Yad Vahsem Museum in Jerusalem, and the South African Jewish Museum in Capetown. Bak was born in 1933 in Vilnius, Lithuania (then Vilna, Poland). His artistic talent was first recognized when he had his first exhibition in the Vilna Ghetto at the age of nine. Bak and his mother survived the ghetto, while his father and his four grandparents perished. Bak has since lived and worked in Tel Aviv, Paris, Rome, New York, and Lausanne. In 1993, he settled in Massachusetts. Bak has been the subject of numerous articles, scholarly works, and 15 books. In 2001 he published his memoir, Painted in Words, which has been translated into several languages. He has also been the subject of two documentary films and was the recipient of the 2002 German Herkomer Cultural Prize.
