About Northeastern

Expanded message Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global, experiential, research university. Our tradition of partnership and engagement creates a distinctive approach to education and research built on the values of experiential learning, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Northeastern is the recognized leader in experiential learning, anchored in the world’s most innovative cooperative-education program. We offer students opportunities for professional work, research, service, and global learning across the United States and 82 other countries on seven continents. The same spirit of real-world engagement guides a use-inspired research enterprise that is strategically aligned with three global imperatives: health, security, and sustainability. Northeastern offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs leading to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools, and select advanced degrees at graduate campuses in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Seattle.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Northeastern started with an innovative idea: that education is about engaging with the world to solve problems and lead change. That distinctive approach, founded on the spirit of cooperative education, has created a universitywide culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. These core values infuse our programs, our faculty, and most of all, our students and alumni, giving rise to an ecosystem of entrepreneurship. Our entrepreneurial infrastructure includes the Centre for Research Innovation, which translates faculty and student research discoveries into commercial solutions, and the Center for Entrepreneurship Education, which gives students and alumni the tools to develop their innovative ideas. CEE also serves as a pipeline to IDEA Venture Accelerator, Northeastern’s student-founded and student-run venture resource group.

Experiential Learning

Primary message The integration of study and professional experience enables our students to put ideas into action and grow as innovative problem solvers, through work, research, international study, and service, in 83 countries around the world.

Expanded message Experiential learning, anchored by our signature cooperative education program, lies at the heart of academic life at Northeastern. The integration of study and professional experience enables students to put ideas into action, through work, research, international study, and service, in 83 countries around the world. Students gain experience and confidence as innovative problem solvers. As they move from the classroom to the workplace and back, they acquire—and share with their peers and professors—a more sophisticated understanding of the world. This makes a Northeastern education a dynamic, transforming experience, with countless opportunities for students to explore their path, discover their passion, and grow intellectually.
