Former Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx, who was present at the Charlotte campus’ grand opening in October 2011, was nominated by President Obama as the 17th U.S. Secretary of Transportation. Foxx will oversee the nation’s transit, aviation, highway and rail networks and, upon being officially sworn in, vowed to make safety his top priority.

Foxx is a Charlotte native who attended West Charlotte High School and Davidson College. He became the youngest mayor in Charlotte history upon winning his first mayoral race in 2009.

At the campus’ grand opening, Foxx commended the university’s commitment to help grow the local sectors of healthcare and technology. The city of Charlotte will be holding an interim election this September for the office of mayor.
