Full Program Description

Our nationally recognized faculty offer an intellectually dynamic learning experience which trains students to be successful teachers and researchers in English Studies. We are also dedicated to supporting students who pursue careers branching off from traditional academic paths. The program combines intensive study in English and American literature and rhetoric and composition with training in digital methods, archival study, and other emerging methodologies.

The first two years of the program focus on coursework, exposing students to the significant texts, current issues, and critical approaches of the discipline of English studies, with an emphasis on literary history. In the third year, the comprehensive exam process requires students to develop three fields of in-depth research and to conduct a critical intervention in each field. The comprehensive exam feeds directly into the dissertation, a focused research project conducted in consultation with a dissertation advisor.

We also offer PhD students the opportunity to complete Certificates in Digital Humanities and in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
